Medusa's Hair: An Essay on Personal Symbols and Religious ExperienceBy Gananath Obeyesekere

The great pilgrimage center of southeastern Sri Lanka, Kataragama, has become in recent years the spiritual home of a new class of Hindu-Buddhist religious devotees. These ecstatic priests and priestesses invariably display long locks of matted hair, and they express their devotion to the gods through fire walking, tongue-piercing, hanging on hooks, and trance-induced prophesying.

The increasing popularity of these ecstatics poses a challenge not only to orthodox Sinhala Buddhism (the official religion of Sri Lanka) but also, as Gananath Obeyesekere shows, to the traditional anthropological and psychoanalytic theories of symbolism. Focusing initially on one symbol, matted hair, Obeyesekere demonstrates that the conventional distinction between personal and cultural symbols is inadequate and naive. His detailed case studies of ecstatics show that there is always a reciprocity between the personal-psychological dimension of the symbol and its public, culturally sanctioned role. Medusa's Hair thus makes an important theoretical contribution both to the anthropology of individual experience and to the psychoanalytic understanding of culture. In its analyses of the symbolism of guilt, the adaptational and integrative significance of belief in spirits, and a host of related issues concerning possession states and religiosity, this book marks a provocative advance in psychological anthropology.

The Lincoln Highway: Main Street across America, by Drake Hokanson

Review

“With his lively pen and lyric camera, Mr. Hokanson takes us on a journey of discovery. The open road is, in part, a defining characteristic of this country, and the Lincoln Highway is one of the historic traces . . . like the Oregon Trail, the Camino Real, or the National Road. Not just for tourists, the Lincoln Highway accelerated the processes of social mobility, changed our geography, and led inexorably to a new America. This is an important story, well researched and beautifully, perceptively told.”—William L. Withuhn, Curator of Transportation, Smithsonian Institution“This is a model photographic essay: the essay is as carefully composed, as beautifully finished, as the pictures. Hokanson, who says he doesn't like long drives, has written unforgettably about those who do.”—Christian Science Monitor

From the Back Cover

In his new introduction to this tenth anniversary edition, Hokanson revisits the Lincoln Highway and finds it changed - much for the better - since the original publication of this book. Most notably, he calls attention to the reinvigorated Lincoln Highway Association and its efforts to preserve what is left of the old road. Hokanson finds more and more tourists traveling the road - not only Americans but foreigners as well - by car, bus, and motorcycle on journeys not to any particular destination but simply to see America.

My husband wanted a book about this highway (with pictures) for his birthday. It stays by his chair and he is always reading something to me. He loves it!

This is the road that made adventure by vehicle a reality in the U.S., whatever we may think of it now. Vehicle sales exploded when this bumpy, awkward, muddy road went coast to coast. There's a nice documentary film on this road also.

Very well detailed history lesson. The Lincoln highway is coast to coast, San Francisco to New York and I am planning on taking this route and route 66 to and from Sacramento on one round trip. The author obviously spent a great deal of time on the details and made the trip himself. It was published in 1988 and all photo's are in black and white some dating back to 1915.The only issue I had, was I bought it used through an Amazon third party and I feel my book was maybe mis classified as far as condition by the bookseller. It had a page or two ripped out and was a library book. Bookseller had very good ratings so possibly this just slipped by. Since I am just using it for my own research I will keep it. You get what you pay for, usually and in this case I did. If it was a gift for someone I would have bought new.

I'm a history junkie and I admit it. And this book feeds my habit superbly. Drake Hokanson has done an excellent job of documenting the birth of the concept of a national road across the United States. It was the dawn of the motor age and the car makers realized that the future of their business depended on more than just regional travel. The visionaries of the Lincoln Highway saw their concept as unifying the continent, much as the transcontinental railroad had done 50 years before. The job of selling an idea, the politics of route locations, the romanticism and danger involved in striking out across no man's land to "see the country" and the techniques of keeping people motivated are all part of a well-woven story. His narrative mastery in describing what it felt like when he camped out where others had camped in the past had me feeling like I was right there with him. I love it when writing pulls me into the flow. In addition, Hokanson includes some beautiful archival photos from the University of Michigan as well as some he himself shot during research trips for the book. I wound up a little sad when I got to the last chapter because it was soon to be over. I think that's the mark of a good writer.

It wasn't as thorough as expected and the photographs were minimal.

It's fine, but I wish it had more on the highway going through Echo Canyon Utah.

The book arrived in good condition, however it appears to be a book from a public library. I wonder if I have the right to own the book.
