The Last Lullaby is the culmination of Aaron Kramer's fifty-year devotion to translating the poetry of the Holocaust. The full horror of the genocide and the sublime spirit of those who resisted are given voice on these pages. These poets - originally writing in Yiddish - speak from the ghettos, way-stations, death camps, and partisan forests. Placing each group in its historic and literary context with comprehensive introductory essays, Professor Kramer presents works mostly unavailable in English - until now.

From Booklist Kramer, a poet and scholar specializing in the translation of Yiddish literature, has been collecting and translating poetry written by victims and survivors of the Holocaust for 50 years, determined to preserve this indelible evidence of their courage and grief. The poignant works collected here include poems by Europeans and Russians who attained recognition as published writers, as well as poems and songs by people who never intended to become poets but who were driven to express the unbearable emotions aroused by the horrors of the Nazi era. Kramer has translated and preserved poems written under nightmarish circumstances in Jewish ghettos, way stations, death camps, and forests, poems full, not of fear and loathing, but of shock, of course, and sorrow and also deep spirituality, love, and forgiveness. Most are not works of art but the prayers of martyrs and the elegies of mourners, and as such, they glow with all that is good and strong in the human heart. Donna Seaman

Bought this for my Hamilton musical obsessed kid and she LOVED reading it and "fact checking" the musical ;) This was one of the first chapter books she read and the vocabulary, sentences, length, illustrations, etc. were all perfect for her. I'm definitely going to purchase more from the "Who Was..." series.

Informative yet easy read for kids of all ages. I love how they use phonetics to help pronounce certain words. Now my kids want to see the musical.

"The enormous influence of Alexander Hamilton is still felt today. We continue to rely on the banking system that he established. . . . . . The Federalist Papers, Alexander's brilliant framework for how the US government should be run, is still quoted by our Supreme Court justices."What a remarkable framer of our constitution, military leader, trusted confidante, friend and father. It's rather remarkable that an orphaned young man, raised in the West Indies, could leave such a legacy! His tragic ending shocked our young America and resonates among historians, until this day.

After the Hamilton musical came out my kids are obsessed with Alexander Hamilton. The book gives great detail about his role in America.

Kids love the “who was” series. Enjoyed the book, finished it in a day.

Bought this book for my 9 year old great grandson. He had not seen the play but we have been playing the sound track - he has memorized it and is so interested in Hamilton.

My first grade daughter loves this book! She’s read it several times. It’s well written, and I have learned a lot reading it with her.

Great fast read before seeing Hamilton in Chicago.Quality children’s book. Now reading 800 page Hamilton biography at my leisure.
