Review

Shane Read has written an excellent book that will be most helpful to the bench and bar for many years to come. I wish he had produced this gem 50 years ago so I could have used it when I was a trial lawyer. It would have also made easier my job as a trial judge if the attorneys had the benefit of Winning at Trial when preparing their cases. Shane draws upon his unique experiences as a civil trial lawyer, prosecutor and law professor to set forth in an original and practical way the skills needed to win in the courtroom. --Robert F. Chapman, former U.S. District Judge, retired U.S. Circuit JudgeShane Read takes a fresh view of the art of persuasion at trial and challenges some of the basic assumptions about what is effective advocacy. Mr. Read s text is a refreshing and thought-provoking analysis that is bound to change the thinking of lawyers and teachers about the art of trial advocacy. The book contains analysis of transcripts of the Timothy McVeigh trial and includes over three hours of video (DVD) of the Simpson trial. --Frederick C. Moss, Assoc. Prof. of Law, Dedman School of LawShane Read takes the mystery out of learning trial skills in this unique book, sure to revolutionize the way trial skills are taught. . . . In Winning at Trial, readers study actual trials where techniques are either executed at such a high level of excellence or so badly demonstrated that those skills needed to master winning techniques will never be forgotten. --Eric H. For several years I thought "Trial Techniques" by Thomas Mauet was so helpful in trial work that it was the only real book on the subject. How wrong I was. While I certainly am not selling my copy of Mauet's execellent book, Shane Read's "Winning At Trial" moved to the front of the line when I read it. Like his excellent "Winning at Deposition" this book should be one of the three books on any trial lawyers shelf. The other two are already named in this review. The book compresses years of learning from our mistakes into 424 pages of avoiding many of those mistakes with concise and practical advice. i recommend that in place of the next litigation seminar, anyone interested in courtroom effectiveness dedicate the time to this book - and keep on using it.

The best of its kind. This book is a good investment. Worth it. Very scholarly written. The author knows what he is talking. This will go down in history as one of the best book ever written in trial advocacy. Whether you are a new lawyer or an experienced one, every lawyer must have a copy of this book.

Well done. All the checklists are valuable and can be used to create your own quick reference guide/outline. And the CDs with the examples referred to in the book reinforce the written word.

This is a good book--full of examples and opportunities to apply the knowledge learned. The more time invested, the better the results.

This is a great resource! It provides insightful examples of famous trials. It is very helpful and it is an interesting read. I highly recommend this book for lawyers. It is a nice addition to my legal library.

This is a fantastic book. I refer to it frequently during the preparation of a case for trial, as well as during trial.

This is absolutely one of the best books written on trial advocacy. It is a must for any serious trial lawyer. There are very few books on the subject, but the author really knows his stuff. From cross-examination to closing this book is a must read. There are very few trial lawyers in the profession today, take this advice from a criminal prosecutor who is in the courtroom all the time--get this book and it will provide insight into subjects very few people can duplicate.
