This book. Wow! I read hundreds of books a year, but very few really grab me and cause me to think of them, the characters, and the events of their lives for days after. The Bright Effect does that. The characters (both main and supporting) are well-developed and just plain real. The beauty of reading a book by Erica or Autumn is knowing that I won't be disappointed, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. The connection between Bash and Amelia, as well as the interactions with their families and friends look and sound like ones you could see and hear from real teenagers. Though this is YA, and is completely and totally appropriate for that audience, the story is so poignant and breathtaking at times that adults need to read this as well.
Daughton and Cope did an amazing job on this novel! The writing is lyrical and engaging and heartbreaking and uplifting and utterly seamless. I didn't really know what The Bright Effect was going to be about going into it, I simply one-clicked it because I love Autumn Doughton's writing.I'm so glad I went into this book "blind." I think had I known what was to come I would have read it differently. I read it full speed ahead and fell in love with the cast of characters. The other reviews have covered all the basics. Just read it. Just buy it. If every book I read this year could be this good, it would be an epic year.A few favorite quotes from the book:“I think of sunrises and sunsets I haven’t lived through and of songs I haven’t yet heard, and of inside jokes and warm kisses and hot chocolates I still have to drink and the kaleidoscope of jangling late-night stars I want to see. In a small voice I confess, “I’m scared.â€â€œI don’t want to always look at things from a distance so that I can hold on to this idea that they’re so perfect and flawless. I want to be close enough to see the cracks and all of the dark spaces. And if it’s true that all of my tomorrows are really beginning right this minute, I know exactly how I want them to go.â€"You break it, you buy it.""So follow me."
A unique, powerful and wonderfully written story about promises, love, pain, and heartache that pulls on your heartstrings. The friendship and love are real and raw. There's heartache and joy that will keep you captivated from the beginning until the end. This writers duo creates magic!I loved Steering The Stars by these authors and to say I was excited to read this one, would be an understatement.Without even reading the blurb, I had high expectations and they delivered. And more. And that cover? Love it!This story is about Sebastian "Bash" Holbrook and Amelia Bright. They are opposites in every way possible but one thing they have in common is that they care about the people around them. Bash, oh gosh, such a sweet, selfless, caring guy! Be still, my beating heart. I loved him! And Carter, and Seth! From the very first chapters, I had this unexplainable ache in my heart. I was afraid *this* might happen to Bash or Carter, I thought *that* was going to happen to Amelia or her sister. But boy how wrong I was...I know I'm incredibly vague, but I really don't want to give anything away. I really want you to experience everything yourself. And I highly recommend you not to read any reviews that contain spoilers because it will totally spoil the whole story for you.And now we wait... until the next Autumn Doughton/Erica Cope novel. :)
4.5 stars Autumn Doughton is a great writer. I love every one of her stories. The Bright Effect is right up there with my all-time AD favorite: This Sky. The Bright Effect novel is a team writing effort between Autumn Doughton and Erica Cope, and I think it worked rather well. I always admire writers who can work together as I could never do that! hahaIn any case, this is a poignant love story between Amelia Bright and Sebastian "Bash" Holbrook. I liked Amelia very much. Her character arc was quite something, but "Bash" took center stage for me throughout the story line. I loved that guy. He was just so good to his little brother, and he was really focused on doing the right thing for everyone he cared about in his world. His best friend Seth became the mentor and really helped out "Bash" when he needed it the most, which I felt took away from Amelia's role as the heroine however it was still a good read. "Bash" was just more grown up than Amelia. That's probably what I related to; Bash had a ton of responsibility as a senior in high school while Amelia's stuff was all superficial. (It became even more superficial as the story went on). In any case, "Bash" and Amelia together were quite something, although the story takes an unexpected turn in the middle that will catch readers off guard.Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and I think you will too.
It's 1.30am and I've just finished this book. I don't know what to write. How do you get across to people the weight of emotion that I got from this book? It's hard to explain...it made me cry, laugh, and at one point I thought my heart was literally going to leap out of my chest. Goodness me this book will stay with me for a long time, in fact I have the strongest urge to go back to the start and read it again......right now. Just get out the dictionary and under all the words like stunning, masterful, sublime, beautiful, unforgettable, exceptional and perfection the example to describe them would simply be a picture of this book......The Bright Effect!
