The villagers go away "a little lighter of heart," but Kalli is so weighed down by their revelations that she eventually takes to her bed. It's the blacksmith who comes up with the fine idea of sharing good secrets, which include a whispered declaration from the potter's handsome son: "I love the secret-keeper." All is repaired a little too quickly, but children won't mind too much; they'll likely be captivated by the warm tones of Solomon's paintings, framed in round or rectangular borders, and by Kalli and her fellow Maldingans, their eyes shining with alertness and intelligence as they live harmoniously with nature. When a young girl discovers her, the villagers attempt a cure by sharing some happy secrets. After a child tells his secret, a blue butterfly flies from Kalli's hands. As the villagers share good secrets with Kalli and with each other, Kalli recovers and spring returns. Then Taln whispers his secret: "I love the secret-keeper." Solomon's lovely watercolors, framed with jewel-toned borders, varied in size, shape and placement on heavy creamy paper, add fascinating details and emotional depth to this gentle jewel of a tale that will prompt discussion on the sharing of secrets, good and bad. This scathing indictment of U.S. Central American policy by an American novelist and a Panamanian journalist chronicles 21 years of misrule from the advent of Omar Torrijos to the fall of Manuel Noriega. In describing the power struggle following Torrijos's death in 1981, Koster and Sanchez charge that the Reagan administration helped Noriega, its "protege and accomplice," steal the '84 election, and they scoff at George Bush's claim to have been unaware of Noriega's involvement in drug traffic. The book deals primarily with the crimes and cruelties of Torrijos ("a tyrant, murderer, and thief") and Noriega ("an entirely untrustworthy, totally amoral, sadomasochistic sociopath"), and reveals how the U.S. "midwifed" the Panamanian dictatorship into existence in '68, supported it materially and morally in its various permutations, then cut out the very cancer it had created in last year's military intervention. A credible, informative report, it is, however, studded with angry charges not supported with documentation, for example, that Bush, when vice-president, shared a metaphorical bed with the dopers.

Researched and written several years before the downfall of Manuel Noriega, this book is a powerful indictment of U.S. policy in Panama. The authors (Koster is an American novelist and Borbon is an exiled Panamanian journalist) concentrate on the conflict between "visible" U.S. government policies and the "invisible" arrangements set in place by the CIA. The most effective sections of the book are the inside accounts of the abuses of power by Omar Torrijos and the brutality of Noriega's regime. Koster was an eyewitness to the U.S. invasion of Panama in December 1989, and he contributes an appropriate concluding chapter to the saga. Panama's descent into tyranny does not make for easy reading, but this is an extremely important book for any serious student of American foreign policy. Some of the authors' specific claims may be conjecture, yet the overall effect of the book is chilling and thought-provoking. For academic and public libraries.

My husband wanted a book about this highway (with pictures) for his birthday. It stays by his chair and he is always reading something to me. He loves it!

This is the road that made adventure by vehicle a reality in the U.S., whatever we may think of it now. Vehicle sales exploded when this bumpy, awkward, muddy road went coast to coast. There's a nice documentary film on this road also.

Very well detailed history lesson. The Lincoln highway is coast to coast, San Francisco to New York and I am planning on taking this route and route 66 to and from Sacramento on one round trip. The author obviously spent a great deal of time on the details and made the trip himself. It was published in 1988 and all photo's are in black and white some dating back to 1915.The only issue I had, was I bought it used through an Amazon third party and I feel my book was maybe mis classified as far as condition by the bookseller. It had a page or two ripped out and was a library book. Bookseller had very good ratings so possibly this just slipped by. Since I am just using it for my own research I will keep it. You get what you pay for, usually and in this case I did. If it was a gift for someone I would have bought new.

I'm a history junkie and I admit it. And this book feeds my habit superbly. Drake Hokanson has done an excellent job of documenting the birth of the concept of a national road across the United States. It was the dawn of the motor age and the car makers realized that the future of their business depended on more than just regional travel. The visionaries of the Lincoln Highway saw their concept as unifying the continent, much as the transcontinental railroad had done 50 years before. The job of selling an idea, the politics of route locations, the romanticism and danger involved in striking out across no man's land to "see the country" and the techniques of keeping people motivated are all part of a well-woven story. His narrative mastery in describing what it felt like when he camped out where others had camped in the past had me feeling like I was right there with him. I love it when writing pulls me into the flow. In addition, Hokanson includes some beautiful archival photos from the University of Michigan as well as some he himself shot during research trips for the book. I wound up a little sad when I got to the last chapter because it was soon to be over. I think that's the mark of a good writer.

It wasn't as thorough as expected and the photographs were minimal.

It's fine, but I wish it had more on the highway going through Echo Canyon Utah.

The book arrived in good condition, however it appears to be a book from a public library. I wonder if I have the right to own the book.

Wonderful, helpful book on screenwriting. This book has helped me immensely in writing my own screenplay, which I quickly realized I was lost in and I needed some education on it. I took a lot of notes while reading The Story Solution, which is so practical in its guide for writing. It doesn't teach a formula for stories, but it very plainly says, "A hero must have this goal, then another, then these complications must happen," etc., and there are virtually infinite variations for that to keep the audience's interest. That to me makes it more helpful than more abstract books about screenwriting (though those can be very helpful, too). And it's a fun and exciting read. I loved it and will probably re-read it several times.

I've been working on the first draft of a novel. The scenes have been planned out (and replanned and replanned) and I've been working my way through them, considering the first draft a big brainstorm. I knew there were still structural problems. For example, the events seemed to be out of order as far as their impact and the heroine has been passive. By the time I finished reading this book on structure, the structure of my novel was completely replanned. Now the heroine drives the story rather than reacting to it and the story drives hard toward the climax just like it should. All the hills and valleys are there now.The part about characters was really great, too. This book provides a lot of examples of roles that characters should play, and this part really brought my novel to life. It had people in it, of course, but they weren't assigned specific roles that I understood very well. This book really pushed my WIP to the next level.

Never before have I read a book about story structure that is THIS BRILLIANT.I've read books that encourage authors to write down a character's likes and dislikes, behavioural nuances, as well as other such hogwash. These books fail to realise that a character liking the colour blue and who flicks their hair when they're nervous DOES NOT make for a compelling character. Advice like this has lead to an abundance of hair-flicking Mary Sue characters who passively wade through their story until they accidentally stumble across The End.Eric distills characters down to their most important function. Reality is, stories shouldn't happen DESPITE the characters- stories should happen BECAUSE of the characters. Eric shows us how to do things right."23 Actions"... although this book does detail these 23 actions in the latter part of the book, everything before this is also gold. I could never figure out why my dialogue was always so weak. Now I know.If you've ever suffered from a plot that flounders and sags half-way through, or had trouble bringing stories to a proper resolution, or had difficulty writing characters who make things happen, or if you've even suffered from writer's block, I recommend reading this book.The only writers I WOULDN'T recommend this book for are those who 1) are half-way through a book already (because reading this book will make you want to scrap everything and start over again, or 2) are greatly opposed to the idea of planning out your story in advance.This book still leaves the hard work up to the writer. But Eric sets the writer on the correct path.Needless to say, I've applied Eric's advice to my own work, and it's already 100 times stronger for it. I can't believe that following the advice of one book has had such a dramatic effect on the quality of my storytelling.

I have read over 200+ books on screenwriting, a most difficult craft to master (I am still on this long journey's path!), most such books rehash the same old same old. Regardless of whatever how-to book(s) on screenwriting you have read so far, get a copy of this book as soon as you can and read it cover to cover. Twice. Three times. Aristotle's three acts, and the typical 8 or so plot points one learns from Syd Field, Michael Hauge, and others is fine for some fundamentals. Then there are a few books that even teach structuring a film minute by minute (literally, as in 120 story beats, a book I read recently). This approach, 23 sequences or beats, seems like the best yet. I already created a template with the 23 actions each hero must take, plugged in my outlined beats for a supernatural thriller I am currently writing, and it worked perfectly. Kudos to the author, Eric Edson, who obviously knows the craft-- he has written many feature screenplays, and also is a professor of screenwriting at UCLA-- who better to get down to business and share wisdom on the craft of proper story development.
